Dear Kawasaki san,

I am so worried about you all. I think the situation is not so good. You will have power cuts like Nepal and some atomic leak is there.

Please have enough supplies of food and water with you. Also fill up your ofuro with water and keep it for emergency. Cover the water so that it does not get light so that no greenish deposits form. Nihon water is good enough to drink so please keep your ofuro full up always for emergency. If you cover the water and do not let light get in you can use that water for years. If you let light in then algae will form.

How about medicine?

Do you have enough toilet paper?

You may need some 昆布 konbu in case there is radiation leakage.

About electricity:

You should keep food like Nepali chiura (maybe you have in Nihon) that does not need cooking or refrigerator. This is beaten rice and you can just eat it. So please keep such types of food that do not need cooking or fridge. So a good substitute would be meusli or cornflakes or any packages cereals.

We have long hours of no electricity so we just get along. Instead of TV we read books and talk to each other.

We do not open fridge etc when there is no electricity so that it keeps cool all the time

We all keep re-chargeable torch light. We charge them when there is electricity and use them if necessary. Torch light is very important because you may need in an emergency at night when there is no electricity.

During no electricity periods you may experience no water in the taps. So be careful with water during such periods. Also you are so used to having water all the time in case you find water shortage make sure you close the tap. People forget to turn off the tap if they find no water and when water comes it goes to waste.

We do the cooking when there is electricity and keep the food only to reheat it just before we eat it. That is because we have long hours of electric outage so we need to do that. I think for you it will be very short outages.

If you have medicine in the fridge just be careful not to open that when you have no electricity.

Oh if your doors are electrically operated you may want to check the default condition. That is do they open up when there is no electricity? or do they remain closed? Both situations require attention.

Please remember to turn OFF the switch at the power socket in case the electricity goes off while you are working on something. For example if you were heating or cooking something and the electricity goes off you shoudl turn off the main socket so that when it comes on it will not create a dangerous situation because you are unlikely to be there all the time. Do you understand? You do not want your house on fire.

Finally and most important is not to lose self control. You all are not used to having no electricity. So stay calm and don't get angry. This is a part of modern day weaknesses. We are too dependent on such things so just bear it. Do things that you would not do.

Lochan
